SHRM Foundation Scholarship Information

 

Student Member Scholarships

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?  Consider applying for a SHRM Foundation scholarship. 

 

 

In 2010, the SHRM Foundation will award 25 scholarships totaling $52,500 to students interested in pursuing HR careers. You have until October 15, 2010 to submit an application for awards ranging in value from $500 to $2,500. 

 

 

ELIGIBILITY: 

While you do not have to be an NCHRA student member to apply for a scholarship, you do need to hold a valid SHRM student membership as of October 15, 2010.  Please note:  SHRM professional, general and associate members are not eligible for this program.

The Lisa Burke Award is named in honor of student chapter advisor Lisa Burke. It is funded by an anonymous donor who was one of Dr. Burke’s former students.

 

 


Selection of Academic Scholarships

Prerequisites:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (Undergraduates)
  • Completion of at least one HR management course (Undergraduates)
  • Enrollment in a master’s degree program (Graduates)
  • Pursuit of an emphasis area in HR or an HR-related program such as business, psychology or labor relations (Graduates)
  • Completion of at least six hours of graduate course work (Graduates)
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (Graduates)

Judging Criteria:

 35%     SHRM student chapter involvement and/or commitment to the HR profession
• 30%     Academic achievement
• 25%     Additi
onal leadership and service activities/work experience
• 10%     Financial need

The SHRM Foundation has separate awards available for Ph.D. students, information for which can be found on SHRM Foundation Dissertation Awards section of the SHRM site.   

  

Certification Scholarships  

Prerequisites:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (Undergraduates)
  • Completion of at least one HR management course (Undergraduates)
  • Completion of the PHR or GPHR exam in 2010 or within 12 months thereafter (Undergraduates and Graduates)
  • Enrollment in a master’s degree program (Graduates)
  • Pursuit of an emphasis area in HR or an HR-related program such as business, psychology or labor relations (Graduates)
  • Completion of at least six hours of graduate course work (Graduates)
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (Graduates)

 

  

Judging Criteria:

  • 50% Commitment to the HR profession and future career plans
  • 40% SHRM student chapter involvement and volunteer activity
  • 10% Financial need

 

  

Timeline:

October 15, 2010: Deadline to submit all application materials. 
December 10, 2010: Notification of results. 

 

 

Required Materials:

  • Statement of HR Interest discussing your interest in human resource management and your career goals
  • A resume summarizing your education, volunteer and work experience.
  • Letter of Reference from an advisor or professor

The SHRM Foundation awards a total of $100,000 each year in scholarships for SHRM members:


Scholarships for Professional, Associate and General SHRM Members

  •  Pursuing degrees in HR-related fields 
  •  Trying to obtain SPHR, GPHR, PHR or California certification
  •  Working towards a college degree while also working in the media

 

Awards:
80 Certification Scholarships ($750 each)
20 Academic Scholarships ($2,000 each)
5   Barbara Sanchez Scholarships ($1,500 each) 

Applications for 2011 will be available April 1, 2011. 

 

 

 

Susan R Meisinger Graduate Study Award 

 

This award is geared toward those who have made significant past contributions to the human resource management field and who wish to continue contributing to HR in a significant way by earning a graduate degree in HR.  Named in honor of former SHRM president and CEO, Susan R. Meisinger, SPHR, it recognizes her work in advancing the human resource profession and developing its next generation of leaders.

 

At least one Susan R. Meisinger Fellow will receive as much as $10,000 annually for up to two years of graduate study in HR.

 

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • Acceptance into a qualified HR masters program
  • SHRM membership or certification by HRCI (PHR, SPHR OR GRHR)
  • A 3.5 GPA (out of a 4 point scale) in one’s undergraduate major 
  • 10 years of work experience, at least five of which in HR
